Fundamental Diagram of Traffic Flow
The fundamental diagram of traffic flow shows the relationships between flow, density, and speed:
- Flow (Q) = Density (K) × Speed (V)
- Density (K) = Flow (Q) ÷ Speed (V)
- Speed (V) = Flow (Q) ÷ Density (K)
Level of Service (LOS) is a qualitative measure describing operational conditions within a traffic stream.
| Level of Service | Description | Density Range (pc/km/ln) | Speed Range (km/h) |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Free Flow | 0-11 | ≥100 |
| B | Reasonably Free Flow | 11-18 | 88-100 |
| C | Stable Flow | 18-26 | 80-88 |
| D | Approaching Unstable Flow | 26-35 | 64-80 |
| E | Unstable Flow | 35-45 | 48-64 |
| F | Forced Flow | >45 | <48 |
